For more than 30 years Door to Hope has opened for more than 2,000 women suffering from addiction to alcohol, drugs or both, regardless of their ability to pay. In keeping with our philosophy that addiction is a family disease, we also provide assistance to clients, children, families, partners and close friends.

Founded in 1971, Door to Hope’s first facility was a beautiful English country style home at 165 Clay Street in Salinas. In 2002, a second treatment facility, Nueva Esperanza- was opened at 325 California Street. While the Clay Residence provides treatment for women only, Nueva Esperanza serves women and their young children in a wonderfully restored Victorian home with a bilingual staff.

Door to Hope has always been a leader in substance abuse treatment. When it opened on Clay Street it was the only program for Women within 150 miles of Monterey County and is still the only residential, women-specific program in the county.

Nueva Esperanza continues Door to Hope’s heritage of leadership with it’s cutting edge, culturally specific program for Latinas and their children. In addition, Door to Hope also opened an outpatient program at 130 Church Street to serve men and women who need a less intensive treatment program.
Continuing in its tradition of leadership, Door to Hope opened MCSTART, a collaborative effort of community agencies that treats infants and children who were exposed to alcohol or drugs while in the womb. The program provides the expertise needed to assist these children and their parents and caregivers. Most recently, Door to Hope became the lead agency in two collaborative mentoring programs—Mentor Moms and Dads which serves parents who lost custody of their children but now have permission to reunite with them, and Foster and Adoptive Mentors, which serves people who are becoming either foster or adoptive parents.
Governed by a community board, Door to Hope is a 501 (c) 3 charitable organization committed to excellence and compassion in the services it offers. The staff’s knowledge, experience and professional passion create a home-like environment with the treatment tools necessary to help each client build a foundation for long term recovery.
